Aldersbrook, E11

Bold. Textural. Organic.

The owners of this garden called me in to help them give new purpose to the area outside their recently installed garden room. The rest of the garden is shady and tropical, but the space in front of the garden room was much more sunny and open, so we decided to give it a different feeling by creating a gravel garden around a firepit seating area (which had previously been located more centrally in the garden underneath a large tree). Carefully positioned boulders work in harmony with architectural plant forms which have been chosen to hold their form through winter and provide seasonal interest year round.

We then decided to increase the footprint of the existing decked area to create a larger entertaining space in the middle of the garden. Shade planting in the form of ferns, Hakonechloa macra and epimediums soften the edges of the deck. To help unify the different spaces in the garden we extended the existing brick path using bricks that we found on site and laid soft grey limestone chippings throughout the garden. Finally we painted the fences and furniture black to really make the plants pop.
