Park Road, E12

Textural. Foliage. Mediterranean

The owners of this garden contacted me looking for a complete transformation. They had installed a stylish cedar garden room but a combination of building works and an enthusiastic canine family member had reduced the lawn to a patch of mud and there were piles of building materials stacked up throughout the space. The brief was to turn this into a relaxing space with cosy seating near the house to catch the last of the sunlight and a larger space to entertain friends and family at the far end of the garden. They were happy to lose the lawn but were keen to utilise as many of the materials that were on site as possible.

Status: completed September 2023

The resulting design is a wide, angled path that leads you on a journey between the two sunniest areas in the garden. Large raised beds were created using reclaimed sleepers that were already on site and we specified oversized Scottish pebbles for the path as gravel would have been sent flying by the Clients’ Labrador. Also in the spirit of minimising waste, we worked with the existing patio, matching in new stone to extend and angle the new seating area. At the far end of the garden, the angled balau deck creates a generous entertaining space set around the two stunning Prunus serrula trees.

The planting brief was for texture and foliage with minimal flowers. A combination of tough, evergreen grasses was chosen to provide year round interest and rugged groupings of boulders were positioned centrally within the largest planting beds creating a sculptural solidity in contrast with the softness and movement of the surrounding grasses.

(The) garden looks amazing. Just what we were looking for!
